Only a few hundred meters away from the IZB, one of the largest building construction projects in the district of Munich is underway: the new town center of Martinsried. Construction work is proceeding rapidly, and the first apartments and shop premises should to be ready to use next year. The start signal for the mammoth project “New town center Martinsried” began with an architectural competition about five years ago, where the results finally flowed into a master plan. Project partners are now implementing the individual projects. Approximately 250 apartments, to rent or buy, will be created here, primarily for students and academic staff of the campus. No investor was found for an originally planned hotel with 50 beds, nor for two large markets. So in the foreseeable future there will be several small retailers, a cafe, doctor’s practices and a pharmacy. The entire district is being redesigned to create a large green recreation area with a fountain offering high residential quality, as well as a small meeting place. The Fraunhoferstrasse will be closed off, and all intersections redesigned, including roundabouts. A direct walk and cycle path will connect the new town center with the campus and the planned underground stop of the U 6.
