First construction measures for the underground extension

Construction of a substitute car park for the staff of the Biomedical Centre and the Faculty of Biology of the LMU in Martinsried.

“The construction of a replacement car park for the Biomedical Centre and the Faculty of Biology of the LMU marks the start of construction work on the new Martinsried underground station, which will mean an extension from the Klinikum Großhadern underground station. In this way, the U6 will connect the Garching science campus with Martinsried in the future.“

The first concrete construction measure in connection with the extension of the U6 to Martinsried started on 03 March 2021. “The construction of a replacement car park for the Biomedical Centre and the Faculty of Biology of the LMU marks the start of construction work on the new Martinsried underground station, which will mean an extension from the Klinikum Großhadern underground station. In this way, the U6 will connect the Garching science campus with Martinsried in the future,” says Hermann Nafziger, 1st Mayor of Planegg.

Construction work on the planned underground car park near the Biotechnology Innovation and Start-up Centre (IZB) will soon begin. For this reason, the university car park south of Großhaderner Straße next to the refectory has been closed to the staff of the Biomedical Centre and the Faculty of Biology at the LMU and construction work has begun on the planned replacement car park on the corner of Würmtalstraße/Am Klopferspitz. The alternative car park has already been levelled, but has been cordoned off, as a barrier and an altimeter still have to be installed.

The car park will only be available to staff of the Biomedical Centre and the Faculty of Biology at LMU and will not be open to the public. Between 100 and 120 staff vehicles will be able to park in this new area over the next few months. Once the replacement car park has been completed, the actual planned construction work on the university car park south of Großhaderner Straße next to the refectory can begin. Half of the car park will be covered with a parking deck and will then provide parking for around 80 additional cars. After completion of the extended parking deck, the area will initially be available for construction containers for the U-Bahn construction site.

I am pleased that the underground construction is finally picking up speed. For many employees of the institutes and start-ups at the IZB, this will be a great benefit and an enormous relief for their careers and studies,” says Dr. Peter Hanns Zobel, Managing Director of the IZB.

Last October, there was already extensive discussion about whether the additional parking spaces would be sufficient for underground travellers. The underground extension has the function of connecting the campus to the city of Munich. The Martinsried streets should not be parked over by day-trippers who want to travel into the city, leaving residents with no parking options. The large Park & Ride car park at the Munich-Großhadern underground station is still officially available for this purpose.
