im Dialog: What does a Biological Technical Assistant do and how long does the training take?
Dr. Stach: A biological technical assistant works in (molecular) biology, pharmaceutical and medical research laboratories. The two-year full-time training period teaches practical and theoretical skills that are required for working in modern biology, e.g. performing molecular biology experiments, handling tissue culture, working with microorganisms, etc.
The training ends with the state-certified Biological Technical Assistant examination. After one year of vocational training, it is possible to pursue further training as a state-approved chemical technician.

im Dialog: Where does the training take place?
Dr. Stach: The training to become a BTA mainly takes place in our teaching facilities at the Innovation and Start-up Center for Biotechnology (IZB). Here, we have our own modern laboratories, which are tailor-made for this training.

im Dialog: What are the requirements?
Dr. Stach: Anyone can become a BTA if they possess an intermediate school leaving certificate or equivalent (“Quabi”, Realschulabschluss, Wirtschaftsschulabschluss) or high school leaving certificate (Oberstufenreife, Abitur).
