About Omegametrix

Omegametrix gives access to the standardized fatty acid analytical method „HS-Omega-3 Index®“. Since day one, Omegametrix has been working with and for the best universities, companies, organizations, doctors, check-up centers asf. with an interest in fatty acids. This generated numerous new insights, some of them fundamental, newly defining the relevance of fatty acids, and outdating some conventional wisdoms of nutrition, including the nomenclature. Omegametrix has redefined and fundamentally expanded the significance of fatty acids. More and more, this is also accepted in clinical routine, which is partly responsible for the continuous, sometimes exponential, growth of Omegametrix. In a logical way, scientific success therefore was followed by economic success. Omegametrix owes its success to many aspects, like  patience, fortune, and the IZB.

What is your motivation?

The first and only standardized analytical method for fatty acids in the world „HS-Omega-3 Index®“ was invented, defined, and developed by the founder of Omegametrix and a collaborator. Measured are the levels of 26 fatty acids in
erythrocytes. A cornucopia of new insights followed, since levels of fatty acids like EPA and DHA turned out to be relevant, much more so than intake of fatty acids. By now more is known about other individual fatty acids, like certain trans  fatty acids. Measuring levels of fatty acids has turned into a gateway to knowledge, which is why our measurement become part of clinical routine. Generating knowledge and make this knowledge relevant – our driving force.

Omegametrix® is the standard and reference laboratory for fatty acid analysis of erythrocytes and dried blood drops. The highly quality-assured method generates the HS-Omega-3 Index®, the HS-Trans Index®, and other information on a total of 26 fatty acids. More than 300 publications and more than 50 research projects based on this specific analysis give the standard meaning and guarantee how the results are to be assessed.

The managing director Prof. Dr. Clemens von Schacky is also the head of preventive cardiology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. He is recognized worldwide as one of the outstanding experts on the cardiovascular system. Together with Prof. Dr. W.S. Harris of the non-profit research organization Sanford Research, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA, Prof. von Schacky invented the omega-3 index in 2002, which records the status of people with regard to their fatty acids. The measurement method was standardized in such a way that it now meets the highest quality criteria in clinical chemistry.

Omegametrix is the only laboratory in Europe that is able to correctly determine the Omega-3 index. Together with the most renowned working groups around the world, such as Harvard, Charité, Framingham and the University of Munich, Omegametrix is reviewing the significance of the Omega-3 Index measurement method in over 50 scientific projects. For example, a high index has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Sudden cardiac death is up to ten times less likely and the risk of a heart attack is significantly lower. The omega-3 index also plays a role in the structure and function of the brain as well as in cognitive performance and mental illness. Prof. von Schacky assumes that the omega-3 index will be included in routine clinical examinations, as in the USA.
